Effective Writing Instruction for Adolescent Writers Part 1

Part 1: Understanding the Adolescent Writer and Strengthening Foundational Skills

This session will introduce writing as a multicomponent, developmental process through a levels-of-language lens, with attention to word-, sentence-, and discourse-level demands. Participants will examine how writing develops across these levels and how the Interactive Dynamic Literacy model (Kim, 2020) provides a coherent framework for understanding the reciprocal relationship between writing and reading. The session will also explore what proficient writing looks like in secondary settings and consider how difficulties at one level of language may constrain performance at others. Emphasis will be placed on using this framework to guide instructional priorities and better understand why many adolescent writers continue to struggle.
