What future impact might education technology innovation have on reading results? What is the easiest way for entrepreneurs in education technology to work with schools?
Looking forward to this!
“Literacy is a basic human right.” Full stop. Yes, yes.
Collective impact is so important to consider when brainstorming solutions. All stakeholders in the conversation.
Love the idea of college education training, in-services and professional development in early reading and literacy training for not only teachers, but principals and superintendents. Systemic change is vital to change the national landscape of national literacy rates.
I love the term “neuro-diverse” learners.
So important to remember that our brains are not built to “read naturally.” How will this knowledge change our methods when teaching our children?
Dr. Wolf mentioned the importance of families and also the need to continue to catch those that did not get the supports they needed to have a strong reading brain. As we consider childhood literacy, what are your recommendations for supporting adult literacy for those we failed as caregivers of our youngest learners.
Early intervention is so important.
Excellent presentation….thank you so much for allowing us to view the two lectures “virtually”….can you let us know whether Dr. Maryanne Wolf’s slide deck will be available (we missed some of the information when the camera shifted following the presenter).
In the most recent PIAAC study, only 2% of adults worldwide performed at the highest level (level 5), so researchers combined it with level 4 (which is approximately a 10th grade level). As a teacher, I think so much about reading problems in children, but adults have been left behind for decades. Reader Come Home has helped me think about aspects of this epidemic that I hadn’t considered.
Loving the data presented! Imagine the outcomes we could have for children if our nation, state or city actually put some of these items in place! Thinking broader, my hope is one day systemic change reaches the level of putting the necessary policies and supports in place so that ALL children have access to an equitable, high quality education.
Deep reading across reading is the ultimate goal in creating a bi-literate brain!
Deep reading across contexts is the ultimate goal in creating a bi-literate brain!
Early intervention is key. The statistics for Georgia and even Atlanta are alarming! I’m glad Maryanne talked about measures to take to ensure that every child has the opportunity to build their reading brain through interventions.
